Just across the Nile from Maadi is the former monastery of Abu Sefein
at Tammua, used today as a youth center. The priest of Tammua told us the
story that the Holy Family dug a tunnel from Maadi to Tammua instead of
crossing by boat. Tammua was first mentioned as a location on the route
of the Holy Family after a dream of Pope Kyrillos VI (1959-1971). The ancient
keep collapsed in the earthquake of 1992. It was not renewed nor restored
for lack of financial support.
